What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning spine and nervous system. The spinal nerves extend from the spine to all parts of the body and control essential functions. The word "Chiropractic" was coined by D.D. Palmer in 1895 and comes from the Greek words "chiro-praktikos", meaning "done by hand." Physical, nutritional, environmental, genetic, emotional and other stresses challenge a person's ability to adapt. Inability to adapt causes pain, dysfunction and ultimately disease or death. Chiropractic care can quickly improve the ability to adapt by releasing and stimulating your inherent recuperative power. Chiropractic physicians do not prescribe drugs nor perform surgery.

What can I expect on my first visit?

You will have an opportunity to thoroughly describe explain your pain and problems. We will discuss all the events and circumstances relative to the onset of your condition. Then, a physical examination will be performed which will include vital signs, orthopedic, neurologic and chiropractic testing. Imaging studies such as xray, laboratory analysis and other diagnostic procedures may be called for. A careful spinal examination and analysis will be performed to detect any structural abnormalities which may be affecting or causing your condition. Additionally, your upper and lower extremities (arms and legs) will be examined. All of these elements are important components of your total health profile, and essential for evaluating your problem to determine the need for chiropractic treatment or referral.

The Chiropractic Balance Center offers a variety of treatment, including spinal and extremity manipulation, electronic or needle acupuncture and physical medicine modalities such as ultrasound, electronic muscle stimulation and traction. Sometimes, joint and muscle/fascia mobilization is performed using the Impulse iQ adjusting instrument. Additionally, stretching and exercise advice, healthful lifestyle suggestions, breathing and relaxation technique training, meditation and other stress reduction recommendations are available.

Does Chiropractic treatment hurt?

Under normal circumstances, chiropractic treatments do not hurt. Chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe. Physical medicine modalities and acupuncture generally do not cause pain. Children, elders and the infirm are welcome at my office. The goal is always relief, improved function and better health.
